  • At the start of the year, Emily came up to me and said, ''I speak softly because I am shy.'' Together we talked about this; about the importance of feeling comfortable in class and of overcoming our challenges. We agreed that she would read or participate in class only when she feels ready. A few weeks later, Emily raised her hand to read in class, still with a soft spoken voice, but it was clearly noticeable that she was making an effort to overcome her challenge. After this first episode, Emily showed her resilience and asked to read aloud in class on other occasions. She is also always the one to raise her hand to say the prayer before lunch time in front of the whole class! During another class activity, the students had the opportunity to prepare and ask questions to members of staff who help them at school. Emily did a wonderful job preparing and asking questions to her literacy tutor. Well done to Emily for being aware of her challenge, staying positive and working hard to overcome this challenge!
  • Resilience
  • Stays positive and confident when facing difficult situations
  • Badge name: Master of error resistance
    Badge
  • - Emily has shown strong resilience by recognising a personal challenge and taking small, brave steps to overcome it. She should continue to challenge herself at her own pace, gradually taking part in activities that require speaking in front of others when she feels ready.
    - Providing Emily with choice and preparation time before speaking activities will help her maintain confidence and continue building resilience. Gentle encouragement and positive feedback after each effort will further support her progress.
    - Emily benefits from a safe and respectful classroom environment where her efforts are acknowledged. Continuing to celebrate her willingness to try, rather than focusing on volume or perfection, will help her stay motivated.
    - Opportunities such as reading aloud, asking prepared questions, or speaking during familiar routines (e.g. prayers or class responsibilities) are recommended, as these allow Emily to strengthen her confidence through repeated success.
    - Parents and future teachers are encouraged to support Emily’s resilience by valuing effort over outcome, reminding her that courage grows through practice and that it is okay to take things step by step.
